Introduction
Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii is a dwarf, much-branched, cluster-forming, cliff-hugging, summer-dormant succulent with leaves fused into a rounded hairy, greyish to bluish-green succulent body, and small yellowish to cream coloured night-scented flowers in autumn. During the long dry summers, body dries and the whitish remains become a protective cover. Plants grow wild in the mountains along the Richtersveld coast. Easily grown as a potted plant.

Description
Description
The plants form small, dense, winter-active (summer resting) clusters up to 80-150 mm in diameter. Roots fibrous. The leaves are fused into a rounded, obconical, greyish to bluish-green body 10 x 6 mm, of which the skin (epidermis) is densely covered in whitish hairs up to 2 mm long. The older withered leaf sheath whiteish, covering the plants during the long dry summers. The flowers nocturnal and strongly scented, small, with white, yellowish or rarely reddish petals, in late autumn. The corolla tube 4-6 mm long. The petals in 1–2 series, about to 6 x 1 mm, anthers yellow, style 2 mm long bearing 4-6 stigmas. The fruiting capsule globose, 4-locular, 2 x 3 mm, rounded, fragile. The seed 0.5 mm, wrinkled. Flowering is in autumn (March to June). Flowers are strongly scented at night, pollinated by nocturnal insects.

Conservation Status
Status
Assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) in 2021 by Andy Young and his team for the Red List of South African Plants, its status upgraded from the 2015 assessment of Vulnerable (VU). Only known from a single mountain range, the population is declining because plants are targeted by poachers for the illegal succulent trade and at least 3 000 plants have been removed based on confiscation records. Fortunately much of the population grows on inaccessible cliff faces, and plants are well established in cultivation (ex situ conservation), and seed is available from various legitimate sources. However, the species has a relatively small area of occupancy and the threat of poaching is regarded as very high.

Distribution and habitat
Distribution description
Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii is highly localised on quartz cliffs growing in crevices and fissures of a quartz mountain range running parallel to the coast of the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape. Confined to east- and south-east facing cliffs, occasionally also on other accessible quartz pockets. The geology consists of quartz from the Stinkfontein Subgroup (Gariep Supergroup). Succulents dominate this arid region and the plants share their habitat with many other succulents and other plants. Although the summers are hot and dry and the plants are subject to regular fog from the Atlantic Ocean (60-80 days per annum). The average daily maximum temperature is about 19°C and average daily minimum is about 9.5°C, with frost absent. Temperatures with bergwinds can reach 40°C but this is rare. Rainfall is mainly in winter (cyclonic cold fronts), with about 60-120 mm per annum. The plant grows in the Succulent Karoo Biome and occurs in the Vyftienmyl se Berge Succulent Shrubland which is part of the Richtersveld Bioregion Bioregion. The plant shares its south-facing quartz habitat with other succulents such as Adromischus montium-klinghardtii, Anacampseros scopata, Conophytum bolusiae, Gasteria pillansii var. hallii, Kleinia cephalophora, Tylecodon bodleyae, Tylecodon bucholzianus subsp. fasciculatus, Tyledocon similis, Crassula tomentosa and Haworthia arachnoidea subsp. namaquensis to name a few. Also numerous species of lichens and moss.

Derivation of name and historical aspects
History
Conophytum stephanii was named in 1929 by Gustav Schwantes (1881–1960), from plants collected by Schlechter at Oograbies. Schwantes, a historian, had a great interest in mesembs. He is well known for his book Flowering Stones and Midday Flowers, published in 1957 in London, a book written with enthusiasm and which greatly inspired and stimulated many lovers of mesembs, including the author. He named his plant for Paul Stephen, horticulturist in charge of the succulent collection of the Hamburg Botanical Garden.
Conophtyum staphanii subsp. stephanii belongs to subgenus Conophytum section Barbata which includes 3 species, C. depressum, C. pubicalyx and C. stephanii. All these are recognized by their rounded bodies covered in hairs, and nocturnal flowers.
Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii is immediately distinguished from its two close relatives by its rounded greyish to bluish-green leaves the surface densely hairy and bearing small yellowish flowers. Conphytum stephanii subsp. helmutii It can be distinguished from the subsp. stephanii, by the plant bodies being slightly larger with distinct reddish flowers, and grows in the eastern Richtersveld mountains.
The genus Conophytum was created by N.E. Brown in 1922 pertaining to the many species with fused leaves forming a cone-shaped body, the name derived from the Latin conus, meaning cone, and the Greek phyton meaning plant.

Ecology
Ecology
Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii is a long-lived winter-growing, summer-resting dwarf succulent and the plants form dense clusters and mats, and this habit is retained in cultivation. The plants grow in quartz crevices and rocky pockets on east- and south-facing aspects and its highly succulent rounded leaves enable the plant to survive the long dry summer period when the plant goes into its resting phase. The leaves are densely hairy, which enables the plant to trap fog. The shallow fibrous roots are very efficient at absorbing the moisture from fog or rain. Like most other species of Conophytum, at the end of spring, the moisture from the old fused leaf pair is recycled into a new leaf pair, and the withered remnants of the old leaf pair becomes a white papery covering, and protecting the young leaf pair from wind and sun exposure experienced during the long dry summer months. In autumn, with cooler conditions, the new leaf pair and flower emerge, breaking through the protective covering. The small, simple, white to yellowish flowers are nocturnal and strongly scented. Pollination is by a night flowering insect. After pollination, the fruiting capsule develops, maturing during the summer. The fruiting capsules retain the seeds, like most other species of Conophytum, and are hygrochastic, opening with moisture and closing again with dry conditions, thus it only releases the seeds during a period of rain. The keels expand with moisture and this opens the lids and exposes the seeds to raindrops. The raindrops wash the seeds out of the capsules, scattering them around the mother plant. In this way the offspring stays in this specialist habitat, in this case the quartz cliff face. The small seed has a tuberculate surface, which is ideal for establishment in crevices.

Uses
Use
There are no known medicinal or cultural uses for Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii. It is popular in cultivation especially in private collections in the Northern Hemisphere, in England, Germany and other European and North American countries.

Growing Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii
Grow
Conophytum stephanii subsp. stephanii is an interesting dwarf species, and, compared to other species of Conophytum, easily grown. It will happily grow for many years in the same container and soil medium. Because of their small size, conophytyms have became very popular, especially for people with limited space.
Best grown in small containers, in sandy, gritty, mineral-poor medium. Good drainage is essential. Best positioned in dappled shade, avoid full sun, and placed in a protected environment where moisture and light can be controlled. Commence watering in autumn, when the new leaf pair and flower emerge. Keep moist until spring, then reduce watering drastically and abstain from watering through the summer months. Plants can be fed with a diluted organic fertiliser.
Propagate from division, cuttings or seed.
Cuttings are best made in autumn. The best medium is sand. Plant the cutting with the leaf tips emerging from the substrate and keep moist. Rooting is usually within a week or two. Once rooted it can be planted into a container.
The seed is fine and can be sown in a sandy mixture in autumn and covered with a very thin layer of gravel. Keep moist. Remove seedlings as soon they are large enough to handle.
