Family: Moraceae
Common names: Moreton Bay Fig, Australian banyan (Eng.); Australiaanse baniaan, queenslandsevy (Afr.)
A large evergreen tree with a massive, heavily buttressed trunk, large, dark green, leathery leaves and small figs. A tree may reach up to 60 m tall with a crown of 75 m wide and a trunk as much as 2.5 m diameter. It is native to eastern Australia where it grows in subtropical, warm temperate and dry rainforest. The avenue of trees in Kirstenbosch was planted by Cecil Rhodes in 1898. The Ficus Avenue is just north of the Camphor Avenue, between the main entrance and Gate 1. The trees in Kirstenbosch do not set viable seed because their pollinating agent, a wasp, is absent.
