Introduction
Bright and cheerful, the annual ursinias are some of the easiest plants to grow for late winter to spring colour. As a mass spring display, the Skilpad Reserve near Kamieskroon in Namaqualand, must be one of the best in the world. Fields of orange Ursinia cakilefolia cover the ground as far as the eye can see, with waves of flowers moving in the wind and blue, rocky hills floating like islands in an orange sea. This ursinia is easily recognised by the glossy black centre of its daisy flowers, which gives it its beautiful Afrikaans name, glansoogbergmargriet, that literally means ‘glossy-eyed-mountain-daisy’.

Description
Description
The plants are single-stemmed but bushy, branching at the base and reaching 250-450 mm in height and 350 mm across. The bright green leaves are finely divided and between 20-50 mm long. They feel smooth, soft and slightly succulent, and when crushed smell sweet and fresh. The green stems often turn an attractive dark beetroot red colour. At the tip of each stem is a single daisy. While in bud the long slender stems droop downwards and only straighten as the flowers open. An open flower measures about 35 mm across. The petals of the flowers are bright orange, yellow or lime. The glossy purple-black centre, so typical of U. cakilefolia, is formed by shiny scales that cover the inner florets (termed paleae). The number of flowers per plant varies from 15 to 20, and, depending on how warm it is, each open flower lasts for a few days before turning into white balls as the seeds form. In the evening the petals fold together closing the flowers for the night. Flowering is from midwinter to late spring (July to October).
The seeds resemble miniature white paper flowers, and are light in weight, ready to float away on the breeze as they dry, and give the plant its English common name, parachute daisy. Seed can be collected in spring, between September and October.

Conservation Status
Status
Ursinia cakelifolia is not threatened and populations are stable and are currently not under threat. For this reason, it is afforded a conservation status of Least Concern (LC) according the SANBI Red List of South African Plants.

Distribution description
In the wild Ursinia cakilefolia is found on the sandy flats and slopes in the Northern Cape in Namaqualand and the western Karoo and down the West Coast as far as Redelinghuys in the Western Cape.

Derivation of name and historical aspects
History
The genus Ursinia is named after Johann Heinrich Ursinus (1608–1666), a theologian and botanist from Regensburg, Germany, who wrote Arboretum Biblicum. This species was named for the resemblance of its leaves to those of the genus Cakile.
Asteraceae, commonly called the daisy family, which includes some 25 000 species, is one of the largest families of flowering plants in the world and includes many medicinal, food and ornamental plants. It contains predominantly herbaceous plants, although there are almost 40 species in southern Africa that reach tree size. Family members are characterised by daisy-like flowers. Well-known members are sunflowers, chrysanthemums, everlastings, blackjacks and cosmos. Popular indigenous ornamentals include Gerbera jamesonii (Barberton daisy), Gazania krebsiana and Dimorphotheca sinuata (Namaqualand daisy).
In southern Africa Ursinia is one of the more than 250 genera and almost 2 500 species of Asteraceae represented in the region. Ursinia is comprised of about 40 species of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs, of which all except one species are native to southern Africa. The other species’ distribution range extends into North Africa. The majority are confined to the winter-rainfall areas of the Northern Cape, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
Ursinias can be recognised by their large, showy daisy flowers; the thin, dry papery margins of their involucral bracts (which one will observe if you look underneath the flower); and their fruit (cypsela) that has a whorl of papery, petal-like bracts at the tip, which looks like a miniature flower and functions as a wing or parachute, and has earned ursinias the common name of parachute daisy. They are also known as a bergmargriet or berggousblom -meaning ‘mountain marigold’ – a name it shares with many other species with showy daisy flowers.

Ursinia cakelifolia is an annual that completes its lifespan in less than a year. In this period of about six months it germinates, grows, flowers, seeds and dies. This group of plants has evolved to survive in unforgiving environments where only part of the year has conditions suitable for growth. During this favourable season they must take advantage of short and variable periods of rain in an arid environment. Their strategy is therefore to grow fast and set seed while they can, and to survive the inhospitable part of the year as dormant seeds. In order to take advantage of the abundant, but short-lived resources, annuals must be able to germinate fast, and grow and produce flowers quickly and to produce copious amounts of seeds. This species is from a semi-arid to arid, winter-rainfall area. It germinates with the first rains in autumn, grows during winter and flowers in late winter and spring. The seeds escape the dry, hot summers through dormancy until conditions become favourable for germination and growth return.
Ursinia cakelifolia exhibits the phenomenon of heterodiaspory. This is the production of two or more morphologically distinct types of diaspores (seeds) by an individual plant. Heterosporic diaspores may differ in their position on the plant, the presence or absence of a pappus, striations, a waxy coat, stickiness, in their size, weight, colour and shape. Other aspects that differ may include, embryo size, pericarp thickness, seedling size, seedling vigour and the presence of chasmogamous vs cleistogamous flowers. Heterodiaspory in plants is often linked with physiological polymorphism, i.e. differences in some germination requirements and growth characteristics. For instance, the winged seeds of some Asteraceae have no dormancy, while unwinged seed may be dormant. Heterodiaspory typically occurs in annuals species of variable, unpredictable environments such as frequently disturbed habitats and arid and semi-arid environments. This ability (heterodiaspory) greatly enhances the ability of a species to survive in a highly variable environment and is a common feature in open arid vegetation. In U. cakelifolia two achene types (seeds) are present: a white one with a less developed pericarp and black achene with a more advanced pericarp. These achenes share the same capitulum. Research thus far indicates poor germination percentages with black achene. For the white achenes a higher germination percentage has been recorded under favourable conditions. The seeds also have a tuft of silky hairs at the other end, which allows them to attach to a rough surface, such as sand.
In the Namaqualand-region, one of the most floral-rich areas in South Africa, this species contributes to uncluttered vistas of colour as tolerant, pioneer species in both intact and old fields (once ploughed and then abandoned).
Typical features of all the ursinias are the single flowers on stems that nod in bud, the several rows of bracts with rounded papery tips that surround the base of the flower head and the seed or fruit that is topped with prominent, white, spreading petal-like scales. The pappus acts like a parachute and will aid dispersal as it carries seed in the wind.
Bees are the main pollinators, visiting the flowers for their small amounts of nectar. These pollinators will only visit flowerheads when the temperature exceeds 17°C.

Uses
Use
This species is an excellent garden ornamental suited to annual beds or various sizes, rockeries and containers. Picked flowers will open indoors and last cheerfully for a few days in a vase.
Growing Ursinia cakilefolia
Grow
At Kirstenbosch we plant large beds of both orange and yellow Ursinia cakilefolia for the spring display. In autumn (March) the seed is sown in seed beds or trays in the nursery. The soil we use is sandy, well drained and weed free, and is dug over and levelled before sowing. The light seeds are sown as evenly as possible on a windless day, gently watered and then covered with a thin layer of clean sand or fine bark. The beds are watered regularly to keep the soil moist. Germination is usually very good and occurs within 3-7 days.
The seed can also be sown directly into the garden beds, but germination is often irregular and competition from faster growing weeds a problem. The seedlings are pricked out from the nursery directly into the garden as soon as they are large enough to comfortably handle.
The ursinias must be planted in full sun and in well-drained, composted soil. For the most effective displays they must be planted close to each other and in flowerbeds that face north as the flower heads turn to follow the sun.
The ursinias mix beautifully with other annuals like Arctotis acaulis (renoster marigold), Dimorphotheca sinuata and D. pluvialis (Namaqualand daisies), bright blue Heliophila coronopifolia (blue flax), Felicia heterophylla (true blue-daisy), F. dubia (dwarf felicia) and F. tenella (bristly felicia), Arctotis hirsuta (Namaqua marigold) and Cleretum bellidiforme (Livingstone daisy or Bokaaivygie).
Other annual species of Ursinia grown in Kirstenbosch for spring display are U. anthemoides (common parachute daisy or ringmargriet), U. calenduliflora (Namaqua parachute daisy) and U. speciosa (Namaqua ursinia). Perennial ursinias in cultivation at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, include U. abrotanifolia (lace-leaf ursinia), U. chrysanthemoides var. geyeri (coral ursinia) and U. sericea (silver lace-leaf ursinia).
Ursinia cakilefolia should be frost hardy to zone 9 (-7°C / 20°F), but in very cold climates that experience frost, is best sown in early spring under glass, or outdoors after the last frost.
